Since Standard Arabic is not generally spoken in everyday life, it also makes sense to learn the Syrian dialect. “Syrian dialect” is an umbrella term for various similar dialects used in Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan and it is understood throughout the Arab world. The majority of Arabs in Berlin also speak this dialect, so it can be used in everyday life in Berlin. Learners of Standard Arabic often have difficulty with Arabic-speakers, who usually do not answer in standard Arabic, but in dialect. A dialect course is therefore highly recommended for those involved in social work, education, medicine or aid organizations.
